1927 Bridgwater Pageant
Maurice Fearing Cely Trevilian was born 22nd October 1881 to Kate Sedly (widow of Alexander Carter Kenilworth and daughter of William Sedly
Fearing, New York) and Edwin Brooke Cely Trevilian.
EBCT was the 2nd son of Maurice Cely Trevilian Esq. of Newberry, Frome and Parklands Gloucestershire and Charlotte, his wife (the second daughter
of John Portal Esq. of Freefolk House, Hampshire, born 1833 or 1834, date of death unknown).
Maurice Fearing Cely Trevilian's uncle, John Raymond Cely Trevilian, enlisted in the 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment ("The Buffs") in 1858, ascended to the
rank of lieutenant in 1862, retired in 1864 and assumed the additional name Cely. John was married on the 10th January 1871 to Blanche, only child of
Sir Francis Vincent, 10th Baronet.
MFCT went to Winchester College, like his father and uncle. After graduating with a 4th in History from Magdalen College Oxford in 1899, Trevilian
earned his B.A. in 1903. Maurice was married to Mary Susanna Frances Imbert from 1908 until his eventual death on the 4th December 1932 (aged
51). He had one daughter; Ursula Mary Cely Trevilian, who was born in August 1910.
During World War One, Trevilian served as a Major in the Somerset Yeomanry in Gallipoli and Egypt. He was also President of the Western Area of the
British legion; Chairman of the Somerset Rural Community Council; Governor of Woodard Schools; President of the Somerset Archaeological Society;
President of the Somerset Folk Song Society; High Sheriff of Somerset in 1925, J.P and D.L.; member of the Church Music Advisory Board. He also
wrote and produced several pageants.
According to his obituary, while in the military, Major Trevilian suffered a terrible back injury which left him in pain for the rest of his life, although he
never showed that he was in pain in public. Major Trevilian held a stringent belief that there was to be an agricultural revival in England and that the
population (particularly its youth) should be prepared for it.
